Originally known as Rohtak University, Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) was founded in 1976 as a result of act 25 of 1975 of the Haryana Legislative Assembly. In 1977, it was renamed Maharshi Dayanand University in honour of the illustrious philosopher and social reformer. This institution was granted recognised by University Grant Commissions on March 16, 1979.

Additionally, it offers three courses through Gurugram's MDU Centre for Professional and Allied Studies, a satellite institution.
